So, for my first post, I've decided to post the Tony performance from Stephen Sondheim's Passion. I don't know how many of you are familiar with the show, but it opened in May of 1994 and closed in January of 1995. I could sit here and type out pages on this show, as it's become one of my favorite shows [despite having never seen it live]. The storyline is heart wrenching and dark, but the music is flowing and gorgeous. Sondheim himself refers to it as "one long rhapsody". and that's the best description I can think of.

So this is from the Original Broadway Cast with Donna Murphy, Jere Shea, and Marin Mazzie, but there's also a video of the 2005 Live From Lincoln Center concert with Patti LuPone, Michael Cerveris, and Audra McDonald. if you like what you see here, the concert version is pretty good.

more info on the show can be found here.
the DVD of the OBC is available here.

Aww, why're you feeling crappy? I'm sorry!

So I'm pretty much committed to getting to know this show better now. I'm particularly interested in the concert version due to the cast; it is possible that the OBC would pwn my life as much as the concert cast if I knew more about the OBC, but I do not and so my life-pwnage is centered around the concert version for now. (I knew Patti'd been involved and I associate Michael Cerveris with Sondheim via Sweeney, but Audra McDonald kicks it all up to new heights of awesome. IMO.) Anyway, I assume you have it, so when you're back in town p'raps we should have a movie date and I will make popcorn and once I've doused the kitchen we can watch that.

I've been borderline sick since Sunday, so now I've got throat and phlegm issues. fun.

This show is easily one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful ones ever written. It's something every Broadway fan should know. srsly.

The concert cast is how I got into the show, and for the same reason. I saw this and knew I had to see the video. and it's very good. it's a very good staging with amazing performers...but it's not the OBC. Donna Murphy will never pwn my life as much as Patti does, but she's pretty much amazing and her Fosca is...superb. The concert version is actually not on DVD, but the video's floating around online. [I has that, so maybe I can upload it for you in the near future]

as for the OBC DVD, I actually don't have it, but brightredday does. but she is BUCKETS of fun and I could try and coerce her into joining us for said movie date. how's that sound?

It sounds like awesome! Now you should get better though. I will send a memo to your germs to that effect. Everyone respects memos. They're so official-looking.

I'm trying! I'm drinking Thera Flu, even though it tastes like Pine Sol...and watching a YouTube video of a song from Pacific Overtures.

so goes my life.

Everyone respects memos. They're so official-looking.
hee! hopefully my germs respect them!
